JOB DESCRIPTION

The Department of Religious Studies at Davidson College seeks to hire a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor with expertise in Religions in South Asia for the academic year 2024-2025. We seek an expert able to teach about the various religious traditions of South Asia as well as the evolving role of religion in the region. Period and geographical area of specialization open. The ideal candidate will bring a commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching of introductory and advanced courses in, for example, Hinduism, Jainism, Christianity, and/or Sikhism with strong abilities in South Asian language(s) (e.g., Sanskrit, Pali, Persian, Hindi, Tamil, and/or Urdu). Our visiting colleague will not only help our students recognize visible and invisible orientalism at play in the West's study of South Asian religious traditions but also help them discover better alternatives.

We encourage applications from candidates who approach the study of Religions in South Asia from any of a variety of methodological perspectives, including textual studies, history, anthropology, philosophy of religion, and/or postcolonial studies, and who will complement existing departmental expertise in Asian religions.

As a member of the Religious Studies faculty, this individual will teach a full load of five courses during the academic year. Course topics should reflect both the candidate's area of expertise and the multiple religions of South Asia. Examples of possible courses in South Asian religions include Religion(s) in India, Hinduism, Asian Meditation Texts, and Mysticism in South Asia. Courses will satisfy departmental major requirements and may also satisfy requirements in South Asian Studies, a long-standing interdisciplinary minor at the College. Further, we welcome a candidate's willingness to teach courses that satisfy the College's graduation requirements in Justice, Equality, and Community (JEC) and Cultural Diversity.

Applicants should submit a cover letter; CV; teaching statement (1-2 pages); research statement (1-2 pages); and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity (DEI) statement (1-2 pages). The DEI statement should describe how your teaching, research, and/or service might contribute to Davidson's institutional commitment to diversity and inclusion. Application materials should be submitted by February 23, 2024, to receive full consideration and can be submitted online at davidson.edu/jobs. Three letters of recommendation, one of which should specifically address undergraduate teaching, will be solicited from candidates later in the search process.

Please address questions to Anne Blue Wills (chair, Department of Religious Studies anwills@davidson.edu).

Information about how to submit an application can be found at davidson.edu/jobs.
