Missouri Business Alert at the Missouri School of Journalism

Job Description

The Missouri School of Journalism and Missouri Business Alert are seeking an adaptable, forward-thinking, multi-platform journalist to serve as senior digital editor of a growing statewide business news publication.

The senior digital editor for Missouri Business Alert will work in a hybrid role, both editing and reporting for the publication. They will assign and develop stories for student reporters, edit stories and coordinate with the publication's managing editor to oversee newsroom operations. Additionally, they will report and produce some stories of their own.

Missouri Business Alert, a digital publication housed within the Missouri School of Journalism, covers business and economics in Missouri. Missouri Business Alert publishes across platforms including a website, email newsletters and podcasts. Its stories are syndicated by partner publications within the School of Journalism and across the state.

Since 2012, School of Journalism students have obtained hands-on experience at Missouri Business Alert, utilizing the Missouri Method of learning by doing. The school's media holdings, known collectively as the One Newsroom, include a daily newspaper (the Columbia Missourian), a city magazine (Vox), a commercial NBC-affiliated television station (KOMU-TV), an NPR member station (KBIA-FM) and Missouri Business Alert.

This will be a collaborative and cross-platform position that involves both writing and editing. It will be part of Missouri Business Alert's partnership in the One Newsroom, and will involve producing and editing content that can be used across all the One Newsroom platforms. The editor will report directly to Missouri Business Alert's management team and will be expected to collaborate with the One Newsroom digital team.

The ideal editor will have reporting, editing and multimedia production skills, a knack for finding business and economics stories, and an enthusiasm for working with aspiring journalists.

The senior digital editor will:
  • Report and produce coverage of business and economics news
  • Assist the managing editor in assigning, managing and editing work from reporters
  • Work with community members and leaders to build relationships and ensure inclusive coverage
  • Work with editors in other newsrooms and students at other Missouri School of Journalism news platforms to
    create quality converged coverage
  • Handle other duties as assigned
This will be a full-time university staff position with benefits.

The anticipated start date for the position is May 2024.

Shift

Work hours will vary depending on news coverage and production needs that will be determined in consultation with the publication's managing editor.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least two years of experience reporting, writing and producing in a digital newsroom
  • At least one year of experience editing in a digital newsroom
The senior digital editor must have:
  • The ethical judgment and skill to teach young journalists how to make tough calls on their feet.
  • A proven track record of producing quality news coverage.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative problem-solving skills.
  • A deep, applied understanding of how to use visual and audio journalism, digital video, and social media to enhance journalistic storytelling.
  • The ability to juggle a vibrant daily newsroom's many needs with ambitious, long-term projects.
  • A track record as a collegial collaborator in a newsroom without silos.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $51,850 - $55,000

Grade: GGS-10
